How to furnish a small bedroom?
Small bedroom. Techniques for visually increasing space
Unfortunately, in our country, quite a lot of families are familiar with the problem of small living quarters. But fortunately, there are a number of design tricks that you can use to visually enlarge the space. It should be immediately noted that there are several controversial issues in which experts have not come to a consensus. We will highlight them separately. First, let’s note the unconditional points.
Wall color. In a small room, only light colors are allowed. Warm shades fill it with comfort, but at the same time “narrow” the space. Cold ones saturate the room with light and visually expand it, making it, however, more formal. Whether it will be decorative plaster, painting or wallpapering – it does not matter. The main thing is the choice of color. If, at the same time, one wall (best of all, the one near the head of the bed) will have a different color – more saturated and deep – this will add additional volume to the room. It must be remembered that the vertical pattern “lengthens” the room, making it narrower, the horizontal one, on the contrary, expands and visually lowers the ceiling. The use of wallpaper with a large pattern is categorically contraindicated – they will emphasize the small scale of the room.
Choice of furniture. It is better to use medium-sized furniture. Heavy cabinets and chests of drawers should be abandoned. Bedside tables are also best replaced with consoles. All furniture should have legs, and not “grow” out of the floor. This will give it airiness and make the interior lighter. Using mirrors will saturate the room with additional light and space. Designers are advised to ignore one of the Feng Shui settings and place a mirrored surface in front of the window – this way it will fulfill its function as much as possible.
Lighting. A small room can be visually expanded thanks to the right lighting scenario. You need to use multiple light sources. Bulky chandeliers in the center of the room are contraindicated. Possible spotlights, openwork sconces over the bed, floor lamp. A very successful option would be to use a light tape located at the level of the ceiling baguette – this technique will visually expand the room and raise the ceiling. The same result will be achieved when the tape is run over the baseboard along the entire radius of the room. The room will ceiling baguette additional volume if the light tape is put behind the curtain rod.
Decor. It should not be intrusive, but you should not completely abandon it. It is necessary to avoid, for example, heavy massive paintings, however, a picture hanging at the head of the bed with a plot receding into the distance will be very appropriate. The task of expanding the space will also serve as wallpaper, which can also decorate the wall at the head. It is possible to use small open shelves with photographs on them. However, you need to abandon the many decorative pillows on the bed, as well as small decorative art objects that will split up the room, turning the bedroom into a warehouse of forgotten things.
Window decoration. The window should be as open as possible and serve as a source of light. Therefore, you need to abandon heavy dark curtains, it is better to use roller blinds and light tulle. It is also impossible to force the window sill with flower pots or pillows. It will look good to highlight the slopes with a light tape.
Some controversial points
Designers disagree on what color of the ceiling is best for a small bedroom. The popular opinion is white. However, some experts argue that the bright, saturated color of the ceiling will immediately expand the space. An equally bold decision is to make the floor striped. This will “tear” it off the walls and make the room float. In this case, the plinth should be as wide as possible – this technique expands the floor area. These are very bold proposals, and whether to follow them or limit yourself to generally accepted methods is up to you.
But listening to our advice, you will at least visually increase the area of your bedroom and make it cozy, comfortable and aesthetic.
